Saracen’s Tent

Saracen’s tent, a drapery in Luray Caverns, was formed by water flowing down in zig zags across the rock for millions of years. National Geographic recognized it as the most perfect form of drapery stone in the world. Staring up at it, I was captivated and awed by its grace.

Just out of the frame on the bottom right there is a formation so thin it is translucent…

They call this the “cave bath towel”. This caught my eye and held it since we approached the formation. The rock, only one eighth of an inch thick, is translucent. I wish I had taken a clearer picture, but I think this one still captures the beauty and magic of a rock, formed over millions of years, that has the movement and grace of fine drapery.
